Edwardian 14ct Gold Double Swallow Brooch

This stunning 14ct gold double swallow brooch with attached chain may have been used as a cloak clasp or worn high at the neck. It is in great antique condition and is a beautiful example of Edwardian swallow jewellery.

 Swallows are birds known to mate for life, and they always return to their nests after time away. They were therefore used in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery to symbolise love and constancy. Swallow brooches, as well as other jewellery bearing the image of a swallow, were therefore also often given to loved ones when the giver set out on a long journey, as a charm to keep them safe until their return, and to guide the giver home. The symbol of the swallow often meant, 'to safely return home'.

The Edwardian era also known as 'La Belle Epoque' was a time of frivolity and wealth for the Upper Classes mainly because of the fun loving and 'playboy' King Edward VII. Jeweller's responded to these flamboyant times with beautiful delicate jewellery often featuring circle, floral and bow motifs. Brooches were extremely popular and were often placed on ribbon around the wearer's neck to create a colliers de chien or ‘dog collar’.
