Vintage Marcasite, Sapphire And Pearl Earrings

Stunning vintage sterling silver marcasite clip on earrings with keshi pearl and sapphire drops.  

Marcasite jewellery dates back to ancient Greek culture and experienced a revival in Georgian times as it was cheaper and less rare than diamonds. Queen Victoria wore Marcasite jewellery when mourning the loss of Prince Albert as it was considered less showy than diamonds which again increased its popularity. Marcasite again came to the fore in the Art Deco period and is still a popular jewellery choice today. 

Up until the 1890s all earrings were made for pierced ears. In 1894 the screw-back earring was invented, allowing women without pierced ears to wear earrings. The earring clip was patented in 1934 and by the 1940s became the preferred earring style for women without pierced ears.
