Antique Sterling Silver Heart Perfume Bottle Necklace

Antique sterling silver perfume bottle in a heart shape on a sterling silver and pearl handwired chain.

The bottle is hallmarked for Chester approximately 1900-1915. The date mark is worn so we are unable to ascertain the exact date. It has the makers mark S M & Co for Sampson, Mordan & Co Ltd. Sampson Mordan (1790-1843) was a British silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. He left his business in the hands of his two sons, Sampson Mordan Jr and Augustus Mordan and by 1865, the Mordan’s manufactory was based at 41 City Road, London. The company continued trading until 1941 when their premises was bombed during the Second World War.

Perfume bottles were often one of the components of a ladies chatelaine. A chatelaine was generally carried by the lady of the house and was a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain was mounted with useful household items such as scissors, fruit knives, thimbles, watches, keys, small purses, stamp cases and pencils. 

The perfume bottle measures 4.5cm x 3cm and total length of the necklace including the perfume bottle is 40cm (from the neck). The chain measures 46cm.

The perfume bottle does have signs of wear due to its history and has slight marks on the surface. We do not believe the stopper is silver. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care.
