Pietra Dura Antique Brooch Locket

Pietra Dura is Italian for "Hard Stone" and the Pietra Dura craftmanship originally flourished in Italy particularly in Florence during the late 16th and 17th century. It is a laborious process of placing inlaid stone into a hard backing. At a glance it looks like painting. The stone inlay work is finely crafted, beautiful, and highly collected. 

This beautiful example features a central floral design and has a locket compartment at the back for a photo or special momento. These type of brooches were often called mourning brooches as the wearer could place a photo or lock of hair of a lost loved one in the compartment to keep them close. It has a C clasp and is in excellent antique condition.

Brooches are enjoying a revival and, most importantly, they are shedding their reputations as being reserved for women of a certain age. They have been a  staple since the Bronze Age, when they were used as a practical means for securing clothing and have become ever more versatile over time.  

It measures 3.5cm x 3cm.
