Beautiful large vintage sterling silver marcasite cameo brooch/pendant on a sterling silver curb chain. A totally unique piece of jewellery which can be worn as a brooch or necklace.
In the 18th century women of the upper class began wearing impressively carved cameo gemstones as a sign of wealth and prestige and Queen Victoria is credited with popularising shelled cameos during her reign. The 19th century also introduced a new type of cameo, those that were made from petrified lava. Coloured lava extracted from an archaeological dig at Pompeii was used for highly detailed carvings. Women during this time embarking on their "Grand Tours" often purchased lava cameos as mementos from their travels, which established the objects as a symbol of status and wealth.
Marcasite jewellery dates back to ancient Greek culture and experienced a revival in Georgian times as it was cheaper and less rare than diamonds. Queen Victoria wore Marcasite jewellery when mourning the loss of Prince Albert as it was considered less showy than diamonds which again increased its popularity. Marcasite again came to the fore in the Art Deco period and is still a popular jewellery choice today.
The cameo brooch measures 6cm x 4cm and is on a 55cm chain.
