Beautiful gold filled locket on a gold fill chain.
The locket is marked gold fill and has the LaMode trademark.
“La Mode” was a trademark used by Ripley and Gowan of Attleboro, Massachusetts. The company’s history dates back to the 1880s, and until the 1930s it often used the mark “R & G.” U.S. trademark filings indicate that Ripley and Gowan filed for use of “La Mode” as a trademark in 1924.
Container jewellery to house tokens and special items have been around since Egyptian times and the first “lockets” held medicinal herbs, religious relics, prayers or perfumes. Elizabeth 1 is thought to have owned one of the first sentimental lockets which was a ring depicting tiny portraits of both herself and her mother Anne Boleyn. Before the invention of photography locks of hair were often put in lockets to remind you of loved ones. The Victorian era took this to a new level with the popularity of mourning jewellery. The popularity of lockets as a keepsake grew with the widespread use of photography and endures today.
The locket measures 1.8cm x 1.8cm and the chain measures 46cm.
Gold fill has the same desirable properties and look of solid gold. It won’t tarnish and will not rub off. If treated with care gold filled jewellery can be worn daily without fear of fading or rubbing off.
