This pretty Victorian 9ct gold horseshoe pin has inset seed pearls and is in excellent condition. The pin is a base metal.
The Horseshoe is probably the most commonly recognised good luck symbol made popular during the Victorian era when there was an increase in superstition. it is thought to be lucky, and the horseshoe symbol is a magically protective amulet or talisman.
Stick pins were used from 1830s to the 1920s for fixing and holding a gentleman’s cravat in place. By the 1890's stick pins were also emerging in womenswear often as hat pins but also in sportswear. In 1909, as the suffragette movement was gathering momentum there were fears that hat pins could be used as weapons. This led to a bill being passed instructing that women’s pins had to be 9 inches long or less.
The horseshoe measures 1cm x 1cm and the pin measures 5.5cm.
