This one of a kind necklace features a beautiful very unusual round sterling silver vesta case on a sterling silver curb chain. It is hallmarked Birmingham 1919 with the makers mark D & F for Deakin Francis and still has some of the original matches inside. The vesta case is engraved with the initials H.J.H and the dae 12.9.21.
A totally unique and stunning necklace.
Vesta Cases were small portable boxes used to carry vestas (short matches) and were carried by men and women alike. So called after the name of one of the early makers (which was taken from the goddess Vesta, a Roman deity of fire and the hearth), they came into use around the 1830s and were produced extensively between 1890 and 1920.
The vesta case measures 4.5cm in diameter. The total length of the chain is 70cm.
