Stunning Edwardian sterling silver sovereign holder on a sterling silver chain and with a large clasp. The case is hallmarked Birmingham 1900. This is a gorgeous piece of history and is in excellent condition with initials FD in very ornate script on the front.
A sovereign case is used for carrying either full or half gold sovereign coins and often worn on a gentleman's Albert/watch chain and kept in a waistcoat pocket. The coins would be stacked tightly together by a spring action mechanism; a case usually holds about 4 or 5 sovereigns.
The sovereign case measures 5cm x 4.5cm (including the bail). The total length of the chain including the clasp is 45cm.
