This beautiful Aesthetic period brooch features an image of a swallow and has a compartment at the back which would have been used for a keepsake of a loved one.
The Aesthetic Period (1885-1901) is defined as one of reaction against previous jewellery periods. Victorians became disillusioned with current fashions moved toward a time of more refined artistic taste. Swallows are birds known to mate for life, and they always return to their nests after time away. They were therefore used in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery to symbolise love and constancy. Swallow brooches, as well as other jewellery bearing the image of a swallow, were therefore also often given to loved ones when the giver set out on a long journey, as a charm to keep them safe until their return, and to guide the giver home. The symbol of the swallow often meant, 'to safely return home'.
Brooches are enjoying a revival and, most importantly, they are shedding their reputations as being reserved for women of a certain age. They have been a staple since the Bronze Age, when they were used as a practical means for securing clothing and have become ever more versatile over time.
This brooch measures 4cm x 3cm.
