This beautiful necklace features a Victorian British threepence love token with the name Pollie engraved on one side. It has a beautiful pearl and garnet drop and is on a gold fill chain.
The British threepence was know as a threepence or threepenny bit and was first used in England during the reign of Edward VI (1547-53). All threepences minted from 1816 to 1919 were made of sterling silver and those produced between 1920 and 1946 were half silver, half nickel.
The love token is a coin that has been smoothed flat on one or both sides and has been hand-engraved with sentimental messages, names, love signs as hearts and knots, various symbols, initials of the giver or intertwined initials of giver and receiver. The practice of engraving the coins began during the late 1600s but had gone out of fashion by the end of the 19th century.
The coin and pearl drop measures 4cm and the chain measures 46cm.
