Antique 9ct Gold Pearl Mourning Brooch

A rare 9ct gold mourning brooch. A very gorgeous treasure. 

The surround of the brooch is comprised of half pearls representing modesty and  loveliness. Eye-shaped brooches are called ‘shuttle’ brooches and were produced between 1790 to 1800.

Mourning jewellery is any jewellery that is made to commemorate a loved one who has passed. In the 1800's it was common to incorporate hair within jewellery. Often jewellers would place locks of hair from the deceased inside of jewels such as lockets, rings, pendants and brooches.

Brooches are enjoying a revival and, most importantly, they are shedding their reputations as being reserved for women of a certain age. They have been a  staple since the Bronze Age, when they were used as a practical means for securing clothing and have become ever more versatile over time.  

It is in good condition for its age with very little wear and tear and measures 3.5cm.
